The Powder Tower
Next to the castle mound stand well preserved Powder Tower which is national monument of architecture.
The
Powder Tower is a massive quadrangular building with two floors and almost 2 m thick walls. It has been built in the middle of 17th century as gunpowder factory and storehouse belonging to duke Jēkabs. Around 1790 in the building the prison was constructed for the court of of the lord of the manor. In the second part of the 20th
century, for a short time, the tower was used by people as a home. According to stories there were secret passages and cellars under the tower where in the beginning of the last century men found bottles of wine that were more then hundred years old.
